I’ve been using restic and Backblaze for my backup, primarily for critical stuff I can’t afford to lose. The backup runs every 7 days, except for the Vaultwarden container, which contains all the credentials I couldn’t possibly memorize (some are 30+ characters!) and is backed up daily.

Today, while trying to rotate my admin token, I screwed up the docker-compose.yaml file, and all my data was gone. I’m still not sure how it resulted in deleted data, but it happened. I’d never needed to use my backup before, and just when I was celebrating that fact, this nightmare occurred.

Fortunately, restic is straightforward, and it only took a few minutes to restore:

I suppose this was inevitable sooner or later. I literally had a small panic attack when I realized all the files in the data folder were gone. I couldn’t thank restic, Backblaze, and my past self (who thought “I should probably back these up”) enough.
